At MSL we embrace and adopt the principles advocated by the UK Engineering Council in dealing with risk and our responsibility to society. This is achieved by:
1. Application of professional and responsible judgement and where appropriate taking a
leadership role
2. Adopting a systematic and holistic approach to risk identification, assessment and management
3. Compliance with Legislation, Acts and Codes, whilst seeking further improvements
4. Ensuring good communication
5. Ensuring systems for oversight and scrutiny are in place
6. Contribute to increased awareness of risk
Through the effective management of risk, MSL will:
- improve the reliability and effectiveness of our service
- minimise the impact of potential problems or adverse effects
- provide early warning of potential threats
- help ensure demonstrable compliance with regulations
- improve the resilience of our and our clients’ organisations
- maximise potential opportunities
- protect project revenue and enhance value for money
- articulate and manage the uncertainty surrounding the decisions being made
Some level of risk is inherent in any engineering project, and MSL will always strive for transparency when communicating about risk by using terms that are understandable for a non-specialist. We believe that effective risk management is likely to produce more positive outcomes than avoiding risk all together.
At its simplest, risk is the possibility of an adverse outcome. Risk is often expressed as the consequences of a series of events and how likely these consequences are to occur. The probability of such an occurrence and its impacts are factors to be considered when determining risk.
